Finally I get to write about my trip to Tarkwa Bay.
I’ve always thought about the day I would revisit the famous Tarkwa Bay. Yes re-visit, I had been here once before back in high school when we went to “Sea School” A fun training my school made us go to at Apapa but we journeyed by foot to Tarkwa Bay for a few days sleepover of games & fun.
I always thought to Myself how fun it would be to go back and see how things had change. Well Its safe to say now how ‘Overrated’ Tarkwa Bay is to me.
The Journey there
Before exploring Tarkwa Bay I had read up earlier on the most affordable way & place to get across to Tarkwa Bay from a few bloggers. In case you did not know it’s on an island called “Onisowo Island” that’s why the only way to get across is by a boat. I went with 3 friends of mine (including the Photographer) we boarded the boat at the Mekwe Jetty, I few blocks away from Bonny Camp (Just beside the police check point before the bridge).
Boat Cost:1,500 NGN (Return trip) That’s 750 NGN for going & coming
Black jesus was the name of our Helmsman for the day. He told us we had to be 8 in number before the boat could move, I & my friends were a bit time cautious but after a few minutes of pleading with him he finally agreed (cause we were just 6 in number) and so
The Journey began…
Yes we had our life jackets on at this point, I was super excited about the boat ride and tbh it was the best part of my trip to Tarkwa Bay. While everyone was quite nervous about their life’s I was keen on enjoying the moment and making videos (doing this cautiously of course)
We passed a police checkpoint and few other private islands before getting to The Bay. I’m not quite certain how long it took but it did take a while maybe a 20 minutes ride. We finally got on shore, I got the helmsman’s phone number (Black Jesus) so we could call him just In case he wasn’t at the boat side when we were ready to leave. We set a time on when we would love to go back home & all departed to have fun. As soon as we got on shore The Beach Boys welcomed us and asked we pay a gate fee of 200 NGN which was used for maintaining the beach, the beach boy followed us just in case we needed anything (this includes sits, a table or a hut) but For My crew & I it was all about finding the right picture spot and at first glance that was hard because there were People everywhere this made me a bit overwhelmed, guess I’m more of a private beach tourist.
Nonetheless we got a coconut for 300 NGN & a Basket bag for 1000 NGN. Then we hit the blast button on pictures. As I changed from one look to the other ( Stay tuned to My Instagram for the Pictures). Most of the products worn were Nigerian brands BTW. I did pay 500 NGN to the beach boys for taking pictures at a particular spot that had a yellow swing , My friend also had to pay another 500 NGN for another picture worthy spot with a hammock.
Tips on Exploring The Bay
-Never go on a weekend except you plan on sleeping over with friends
-If you decide not to sleep there, go with extra cash cause you might be asked to pay money to take pictures at certain picture-worthy spots.
-Go with your own food
-If you want to take pictures without any distractions or clutter of people, it’s better you go on a week day
-Keep an open mind; this is very important when it comes to having fun
-Decide to buy anything from a local vendor passing be sure to bargain or not (at least they get more money to feed their families)
It was 6:00pm on the 2/6/18, we were off the island headed back home to dry land.
THE END

Till next time
