HOW TO CREATE FUN GIFs FOR INSTAGRAM OR WEBSITE

“HOW TO TURN LITERALLY ANYTHING YOU WANT INTO A GIF”

Before I share this we all first need to understand what a GIF is most people mistake this for stop motion; in a way they are both similar but still different.

What are Giphys (Popularly known as GIFs)

A GIF (with the file extension, .gif) is basically an image file format that is animated by combining several other images or frames into a single file. This single file is encoded as graphics interchange format (better known as GIF).

WHY USE A GIF ?
GIFs are easily shareable.
GIFs show that you’re paying attention to trends.
GIFs display your fun side.
GIFs can add more context or emotion in a much shorter message.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE CREATING A GIF

  • An idea: The only thing stunting your creativity is the idea, knowing what you want to create, how do you want it to look like? Have an inspiration? Did you come across a Gif you like ? Follow accounts you love to fuel your mind, for me thats what I do and when I see it? I save to a ‘Collection’ on my IG.
  • Break down the process: You have an idea? It’s time to break down the process; how can I achieve this ? What Apps would I have to use? For example:
HOW TO CREATE FUN GIFs FOR INSTAGRAM OR WEBSITE, thisthingcalledfashion

How do you think this was achieved ?

  1. Go to your App for Graphics; Mine’s “OVER”
  2. Add your text & enlarge to preferred size as seen above
  3. There are two text involved “NEW” & “POST”
  4. The two texts are coming from both ends i.e. the left and right side of the image
  5. Use your hand to move both text out from the left and right corners, do this in a straight line
  6. For every time you move both texts out “Click the Save button”
  7. Repeat this step till you have created all the graphics you need to achieve the GIF (In this example: till the texts “New” and “Post” meet each other in the middle.
  8. Open “IMGPLAY” select all the graphics created
  9. Play around with the speed
  10. Tap the arrow at the bottom left of the IMGPLAY app to change it to “Back & forth”
  11. Click Save, select the video format in high quality (of courseee) also select how long you want the video to play.
  12. If using GIF on your website/newsletter; Click Save, select GIF format in high quality.

(FOR VISUAL EXPLANATION)

  • The right App: There are honestly several apps you can use. When I first started out I was using Momento (still a good option) but as time goes by new things come and a friend recommended “IMGPLAY” to me and now I’m HOOKED on it, very easy to use with a lot of features compared to other Giphy Apps. You can turn your pictures or videos into GIFs, change the FPS (frames per second), save in your preferred format, use filters if you wish, Add text or your signature on your GIF, Crop your pictures/videos to fit the frame you want.
  • The best format: If you are posting your GIF to Instagram its best you save it as a video from the App I’ve highlighted above but if you’ll be adding this GIF to your blog or newsletter feel free to save as a GIF format and not a video format.

GIF IDEAS YOU CAN CREATE FOR YOUR BRAND

  • Record a process: Trying to show off how to use a product? or unbox a package? A fun way to do it is via GIFs you can go as far as animating the way you display products on your website for people to buy.
  • Show off your products: The animation allows for a great opportunity to highlight a key function or feature of your product. (via wix blog)
HOW TO CREATE FUN GIFs FOR INSTAGRAM OR WEBSITE, thisthingcalledfashion
  • Provide visual instructions: If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many is a GIF worth? For how-to’s, step-by-step tutorials or recipes, they are a great way to instruct your audience. Since they loop forever, your audience can watch as many times as they need to fully understand (via wix blog)
  • Animate your data : This is an awesome way to depict your data in a much more digestible form. Make use of GIFs to add some color and motion to normally-dull statistics (via wix blog)
  • Take an action: Need your audience to check out a new product on your website? or Click the link in your bio to read a new post? Animate it into a GIF to grab their attention.
  • Provide a sneak peek :Want to build excitement for a future product or your next post? GIFS are perfect for a bite-sized teaser (via wix blog)
  • Share content that makes you smile :GIFs, much like other social posts, don’t always have to be about conversion or sales. We suggest you share some cool stuff sometimes just to entertain your audience. This is really a good practice to stay connected with your visitors and boost engagement (via wix blog)
  • Turning videos to GIF’s: As stated all you need to do is:
HOW TO CREATE FUN GIFs FOR INSTAGRAM OR WEBSITE, thisthingcalledfashion
  1. Open the “IMGPLAY” App
  2. Click the arrow on top in the middle with ‘Photos’ written beside it
  3. Once you tap it, a drop down menu would come out.
  4. Select videos
  5. Click on any video you have on your phone
  6. You have your GIF, so play around with the speed, add filter or text etc.
  7. Click Save, If using GIF on Instagram then select the video format in high quality (of courseee) also select how long you want the video to play. If using GIF on your website/newsletter; Click Save, select GIF format and save in high quality.

THE MENTAL EFFECT OF NOT HAVING A 9-5 |Thoughts shared by 10 creatives

Always thought to myself what life after university would be like, never thought I’d be working for myself. Okay I knew the normal jobs my parents expected of me was never going to happen, wanted something exciting rather than sitting on a desk with a resounding yes sir/ma echoing in the background, knew I wanted to be around fashion or create (which was an escape from me in high school during those boring physics/chemistry classes oops! couldn’t try it for further maths, it was a you snooze you lose situation *LOL

THE MENTAL EFFECT OF NOT HAVING A 9-5, Thisthingcalledfashion

Fast forward to living & loving the life of a creative without a 9-5. For me it gets confusing you need a strong sense of discipline, you need to constantly think of ways to stay relevant and make money because there’s no comfort of paycheck coming in every month end.

In light of May being “Mental Awareness Month” I decided to ask a few creatives and through the question out there needed to know I wasn’t alone and I hope it helps you too.

Not having a 9-5 is not as easy as it looks. Yes, you now have control over your time but that is exactly why it is not easy. You are in control of your own salary, your time, your mood, how effective you are and at the end, the results of your work. It can be quite daunting at the beginning when you are trying to balance it all and still find success in your chosen field, you will have days of doubt and days of complete confidence in your abilities but don’t worry, it comes with the territory. Being a freelancer is like tasting completely new food everyday, you don’t know what you are going to get.

My advice, surround yourself with friends and acquaintances that are also freelancing and have a 9-5 (hey, it’s good to know how it’s going in that world), keep your mind busy and never stop learning and remember that now, you are your own teacher, judge and executioner of your affairs, so don’t be too hard on yourself. It’ll all come together in due time.

Since I graduated from uni, I’ve never worked a 9-5 because I knew what I wanted to do right away.  I knew I was going to be an entrepreneur . I will be writing from someone that has never had a 9-5 but have lived with people that have and know their experiences and I will also be writing  from the perspective of a business owner.

One of the things I love as an entrepreneur, is  having the freedom to do whatever I please at whatever time. I love going to the gym during weekdays( this means more than you might think it is) and staying off work when I feel like I’m getting burnt out. I get to reboot and be in a clean mental space to start again. I also get full time to run and grow my business.

But like everything, there is always a dark side. When I first started, I had no employee and did everything by myself. I had the worst burnout and I still didn’t take time out for myself because I didn’t want to be “lazy”. I equated taking time off for myself to being lazy, which was totally wrong. Another negative is working overtime and not know when to stop. Some days I work till 2 am in the morning getting barely any sleep in and my days is already messed up.  Things like this grew my anxiety to a higher level than it was before

There is also the pressure of not giving up and the fear of being part of the 50% that fail in 5years so you are pressured to put on a brave face and keep on going even when you feel like giving up. You bottle all these up and it messes with you. The months I’m not doing as great I think I should be doing are the worst. I get so down( I don’t want to use the word depressed loosely) that I don’t even want to get out of bed. There are thousand of voices in your head telling you how much of a failure you are and how you should be doing so much better. I still struggle with this part sometimes.

Over the years, I’ve learned to navigate these problems and I’m still learning every day. I like the stability of a 9-5 and I think it is extremely underrated. People like to see entrepreneur like it’s the only way to be a “mogul”. I think that is false.

Entrepreneurship is not for everyone, Entrepreneurship is hard work. You have to be sure you can go through a lot of phases mentally. Although I have been doing this for almost four years, I still get surprised by a lot of things. It’s not an easy road to travel but I won’t change it for anything.

I had four jobs in 18 months because i kept looking to see why i was so unhappy with the first three jobs. During this period, I met fashion and i started reading, watching and came to the realization that this was what i needed to do, I started selling thrifted backpacks and sunglasses initially while still going to my 9-5. My last 9-5 was a publishing firm and it was extremely demanding, Mentally and physically. Out of frustration, I walked in to my boss’s office and quit. I had zero idea of what i was going to do next, And this took a huge toll on me because i went into depression. What i did next was to cut back and start saving money, I knew i wanted to be in the fashion business but did not know which part exactly, So i drafted a list to see what parts of fashion i could shine in And that was when I discovered I could be a stylist and personal shopper.

SHOPENKAY was birthed (my main source of livelihood) I also decided to be a plus size model because as at when i started, there weren’t a lot, And apart from the need for media representation, I wanted to also have that extra source of income. So if you ask me,

Do I regret quitting my 9-5? Absolutely not! I would have been miserable if i kept at it, It made me insane and my mental health was much more important, All my creativity would have been limited and boxed and that would have really made me unhappy, + I wear whatever the hell i want lol, I especially love this because this is where my creativity shines.

I wear whatever the hell I want

Having a 9-5 comes with a lot of benefits contrary to what people think. There’s assurance of a steady income, job security, job discipline, community and network it provides. The year started with me as a freelancer. Having worked in a 9-5 and enjoyed these benefits, I was afraid terribly. Self doubt came in. Can I do this? Can I attract clients? Will they respect me? On days where I had no Clients I would feel so down. Income wasn’t as steady as I wanted it to be. Things started to pick up a little bit and eventually I became comfortable with it. Eventually I went back to a 9-5 not because I didn’t believe in myself anymore, but because I found that I had not disciplined myself well enough to be on my own. Sometimes protecting your mental health also means doing what’s right for you.

Now that I’m in the 9-5 I crave being a freelancer. I miss the creative freedom that came with it. Thankfully, my work place gives me the room to express myself.

DECLUTTER YOUR CLOSET LIKE A BOSS

Decluttering a closet doesn’t have to be so intimidating. At least that’s the idea most people have towards cleansing & detoxing your closet from a decade of piled up things you do not need or probably forgotten you had (guilty!)

Evaluate & Purge

Evaluate your closet by asking the tough questions. Go beyond the basic question of “when last did I wear this” ask a few more questions like:

  • How did I feel the last time I wore this piece?
  • Is it stressful maintaining this piece? (i.e. do I have to iron this every time I wear it, Is all of the hassle worth it?)
  • Do I need to be a certain weight to wear this and feel good in it? Stop dreaming of the weight you don’t have, own your body & TAKE IT OUT

Create a Capsule wardrobe

High quality staple pieces you can mix and match for different seasons. You’re more efficient with your clothes instead of constantly shopping for fast fashion trends which end up cluttering your closet faster!

Knowing your style helps you to curate looks you love to wear. It’s okay to throw in a few trends you love to keep your closet updated each season.

Sell Out or Donate (SOD)

You’re either saving money or saving time. Conventional knowledge would have you selling your Excess to a consignment online store or selling it out yourself at a shopping party or over IG (if you have a decent following), but because time = Money for everyone, Donate and be done with it!

Edit your closet

The more frequent the better, have a donation & sell out bin for later.

Asides decluttering your closet you can also declutter your life in general and here’s a challenge for everyone :). ALL YOU NEED TO DO?

3 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT POSTING VIDEOS ON INSTAGRAM

It took a solid 20 minutes to figure out how to start off this post, that’s what being inconsistent does, It leaves you feeling like you’ve lost your mojo. Maybe I have or it’s just me overthinking it either ways I decided to test myself on a “One week blogging challenge” what better way to start of than with a Post on ‘Videos & Instagram” two very sort after terms. It’s no surprise it ranked first on my IG Poll on what Post to publish first. (see below)

3 things you should know . . .

The ratio of your video: This is a major part of your thought process when planning out a video even if its just in your head. Also keep that thought while executing the filming process. Ask yourself “is my phone/camera to close”? “When i’m posting to IG would it cut out my head ‘? “Am I getting all the details in my frame”? Have no idea what the right frame/aspect ratio is for Instagram? 1080x x 1080px &

3 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT POSTING VIDEOS ON INSTAGRAM, Thisthingcalledfashion

Your video frame ratio can be different from the above (more landscape or portrait) just remember to fit every detail in the video (i.e. caption, product description etc.) into the IG frame ratio while editing. If not you might just get a little frustrated while posting.

The Quality of your video: We all know the purpose of a good quality video its 50x more engaging & pleasant to look at. Be sure to save your videos in the highest possible quality (using inshot/photogrid? please pay for the pro versions and save your videos in the highest quality) + remove any watermarks.

Asides editing & saving in quality there comes the issue of posting a video on IG and it looking shitty & very low quality yep! you’re probably nodding in agreement, guess what the easy fix is? “FAST INTERNET” with the exception of a time when IG was consistently posting low quality of everyone’s video asides this default ? If you’re posting a 1 min long video go where your wifi is fastest for optimum result.

3 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT POSTING VIDEOS ON INSTAGRAM, Thisthingcalledfashion

Music rights: The easiest way to get people vibing to your videos ? or glued to your videos? Using a song that goes best with the transitions & the overall aesthetic of the video. Okay Yesss! you got the perfect song now it’s posting time ? It’s safest to always credit who the music belongs to. For example: I create a fierce fashion video featuring a few of my current fashion faves , I decide to use Cardi b’s “I like it like that” after writing out my caption for my video post, I simply add: “Song: I like it like that and tag @cardib or hashtag the artiste name #Cardib”

This automatically prevents IG from taking down your video when you post it, as long as IG has a right to that music in your country.

3 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT POSTING VIDEOS ON INSTAGRAM, Thisthingcalledfashion

MORE TIPS:

  • Post videos at peak periods & use relevant hashtags for more visibility
  • What’s the purpose of your video? What message are you passing across? any intro or end? what action do you want people to take after watching your video?
  • If you worked hard on a video and you know its sharable content? like a ‘How to” “Make up ” “Funny’ ‘Inspirational” etc. be sure to include your IG handle on your video. That’s how people go viral with no IG handle to reference back to how do people know where to check for more of your great content?
  • NEVER post a video with a watermark of the App you used to edit.
  • Tag the products/service used in the video, this might lead to a future paid partnership which you can make money off or at least save some coins through gifted items.

These are all things I learnt myself from posting videos on IG hopefully one or all of these tips save you time, making the whole process easier & more fun.

PRODUCT REVIEW: HAIR DAY WITH OZONE COSMETICS

Currently watching “The Perfect Date” on Netflix. (Anyone seen it yet?)

PRODUCT REVIEW: HAIR DAY WITH OZONE COSMETICS, ThisthingcalledFashion

Photography: @Dejive

Been a while I did a product review and this one gives me De ja vu! From childhood nursery rhymes to wishing I was an adult this hair Brand was one for the books.

In this post I’ll be reviewing the Ozone Creme Relaxer, sharing my experience and letting you know if they still got it like they used to.

Before I go ahead with that let me share an honest truth you should know: my hair day is never consistent, I do not have a set date or frequency. Sometimes I treat my hair like shii and wear wigs (😭 I really can’t be alone on this one) after a while when I notice my hair getting dew & coarse I switch up thats when the hair day comes in, when I’m about to cut my hair into a short hair style, Slay my edges and steal a few men off the streets of Lagos 🤣. These all take effort & a process which includes:

  • Prepping my hair: Ensuring I do not wash my hair for at-least 3 weeks before relaxing my hair; which I love to do at home by myself and this time I used the Ozone creme relaxer

PRODUCT REVIEW: HAIR DAY WITH OZONE COSMETICS, ThisthingcalledFashion

My Verdict:

For me I love my relaxer creamy like ice cream 😭 with a mild effect when you apply it.

However here are the two things I’ll be basing my review on:

1. Quality I.e texture & ability to get the job done: I’d rate it an 8/10 cause it has a fine texture and it absolutely gets the job done of relaxing my hair right.

2. Mildness: was it harsh on my hair texture after applying it ? No, it took about 30 mins for all of my hair to get relaxed & for it to fully lay my edges & every root which I absolutely loved because I did not have to worry about my hair burning. I was also able to get other things done while waiting on it to absorb my hair.

Extra point: For affordability & easy accessibility to shop products

Price:1,250 NGN for 175kg on Jumia

PRODUCT REVIEW: HAIR DAY WITH OZONE COSMETICS, ThisthingcalledFashion

WHAT’S NEXT ?

• After prepping & relaxing My Hair I wash off with a moisturizing shampoo and apply a leave-in conditioner before heading to the hair stylist for a cut on that same day or a day after.

• If I want to dye my hair & cut it then it is best to leave a space of at-least a week after relaxing before applying another chemical which in this case is dye.

• I cut and ready to Slay for 2 weeks before heading back to the barbers for a trim.

ITS THAT SIMPLE.

PRODUCT REVIEW: HAIR DAY WITH OZONE COSMETICS, ThisthingcalledFashion

Most times people ask “what’s the time frame for relaxing your hair?”

Ans: I stick to a 3 months interval before my next application of relaxer

That’s all from me

PS: How often do you apply relaxer to your hair ? And do you have a set day for hair care ? If you do what products do you make use of ?

MY ULTIMATE CHEAT SHEET FOR PLANNING A SUCCESSFUL BLOG SHOOT

Disclaimer: This sheet is a list of things I have done/do to create content, these might not necessarily work for you as stated but would give an idea of what to do.

MY ULTIMATE CHEAT SHEET FOR PLANNING A SUCCESSFUL BLOG SHOOT, Thisthingcalledfashion

  • I Create my outfits & poses ahead of time: Before you set out to take any pictures, try on the outfits, the best way to style it, the best poses for the type of outfit you decide to wear, Because the way you would pose when wearing a dress might be totally different from how you pose wearing a pair of pants. I usually center my look around a particular piece. For example: A sleeveless mini dress, I could decide to wear a turtle neck top underneath or a cropped denim jacket on top.
  • Create a Moodboard: Inclusive of an idea I’d love to execute, How to style my outfit, Concept of my shoot etc. A Moodboard gives me a great idea of what type of location I want to use, what color I want my outfit to be, if I would be needing props. It’s a visual aide.
  • Location Scouting: I do this physically and online (through bloggers, coffee shops, restaurants, pages that talk about things to do in my city (Lagos) I save these into a Folder on IG for my own private viewing & future referral when I am ready to use that specific location. Physically around your estate or friends estate.
  • Select the best outfits that go with the location & pick out a day to shoot. Best days to Shoot? For me is during the Weekdays because I love to use restaurants & places that cater to other people I love going to these places during the weekdays Mon-Thurs before 12noon or At least before 3pm when less people would be there

MY ULTIMATE CHEAT SHEET FOR PLANNING A SUCCESSFUL BLOG SHOOT, Thisthingcalledfashion

A few tips ? Yes please

  • To make the most of these places? I make use of my iPhone 6s+ to take pictures instead of a camera (because once they see a camera they start acting out)

  • If I am shooting at a coffee shop or restaurant I always have to order something, which most times is a win for me because I can decide to review the place on one post & talk about my outfit on the next.

  • If you’re not willing to spend money on location ? Make use of private streets or a friends estate. For me when I started out I would use a few spots along my “work street” which I noted down when going home from work. Then on a Sunday I would come with a friend/photographer and make use of these spots (weekends are always better for this because there are no workers in the building over the weekend & the streets are less busy). This tip is cost effective as you can take more than one look at once & you can use a camera freely.

  • If you work your default days are over the weekends, which isn’t bad still you just have to be ready to wake up early on a Saturday, Go to the location you’ve selected and create content before the crowd starts rolling in or do the above (stated in the previous point). This tip is cost effective as you can take more than one look at once.

  • If you’re a freelance creative ? You can go to these places ahead of time check them out, find out from the manager if you can shoot there, the benefits they get for letting you shoot. Most times I tend not to ask because they start to charge you which for me isn’t a bad thing if I was a small business owner selling clothes making a decent amount of profit from each piece I sell or an artiste using the location to create a music video. Because the truth is as a blogger you sell these locations more than either of those two cause you’re willing to mention the place used, what you love and people would want to go visit.

MY ULTIMATE CHEAT SHEET FOR PLANNING A SUCCESSFUL BLOG SHOOT, Thisthingcalledfashion

Extra Tip: To save transportation cost & ease off excessive spending, I tend to do my makeup at a friends house close to my shoot location never from my house as I do stay a tad bit far from the main city of Lagos. This reduces my cost taking a taxify/uber to my location & increases my spending capability of going home tired after a shoot comfortably in my taxify/uber with my extra load.

For those who complain about NOT having time to create content because of work ?

First of all, does your office have a fine environment? Or at least an aesthetically pleasing spot you can sneak in a picture of two? If you do?

  • Select a day or 2 days in a week, Dress really nice, do your makeup, sneak out or during your break time take a picture

  • Start a series of what I wore to work today – would make a good content for your audience (don’t worry the pictures do not have to be perfect just clear and decent enough for people to see what you wore)

2 Ways to Wear the Green Leaf Vacation Maxi Dress | STYLE

It’s always fun switching up a piece in your closet, it makes every piece more of an investment than a one off purchase. The ability to mix and match might not necessarily come easy and that’s where I come in, showing you 2 ways to wear this budget friendly Vacation Maxi Dress from DESIRE1709.

1. With a Pair of Sneakers

2 Ways to Wear the Green Leaf Vacation Maxi Dress, ThisthingcalledFashion

This first look was quite easy to pull off as my style exudes comfort & a pair of sneakers is a staple piece in my closet, you’ll totally feel bad ass in this fit.

Do not forget to accessorize either with a Sun Hat (like I did) or a Scarf or Fedora hat and as always a pair of classy sunglasses would finish your look nicely 😎

Note: Have you Registered for The Bloggers Workshop?

2. AS A SKIRT WITH A MILK MAID TOP

What’s a Milk Maid Top? You’re probably wondering ? If you’ve seen the sound of music then you know this style of top is trending now and I’m totally in love with it from your favorite stores like Boohoo, House of CB, TopShop, Iwade stocking it.

5 Social Media Marketing Do’s and Don’ts, THisthingcalledfashion

Experimenting with the pieces in your closet can go a long way so I urge you to take a night/day out, mix and match pieces in your closet you’d be happy to find out what looks you Create. For me I’ve been playing around with my maxi dresses and turning them to Skirts.

HOW TO TURN YOUR MAXI DRESS TO A SKIRT?

  • Take the upper part of the dress
  • Tuck it in and make sure the hands go in properly
  • Zip your skirt up, if your dress has no belt at the waist line ?
  • You’ll need a belt to put around the waist because chances are the measurement for the half-length of the dress would be more than your actual waist measurement, you’d need something to cinch your waist to define it

Paired this look with heels to elongate my legs and show off the beauty of the Skirt. I also turn my top into an off-shoulder top.

HOW TO GET FREE PRODUCTS FROM BRANDS AS A BLOGGER/INFLUENCER

For today’s post I’ll just dive right into it.

HOW TO GET BRANDS TO SEND YOU FREE PRODUCTS AS A BLOGGER/INFLUENCER, ThisthingcalledFashionn

Simply put; You cannot set up a blog and expect freebies to start rolling in. Why not? Because you don’t have any kind of influence, at least not just yet. So here are a few steps and tips to get those freebies rolling in:

  • Put in the work: Be ready to put in work to build your platform to a certain level and not the follow-for-Follow trick (doubt people still do this) or buying followers.
  • Craft your image: Want to be known for luxury goods? Invest in yourself buy these items tag the brands or stores you can get it from, want to be known for skincare share your routine with results, Tag the brands used & how much each item costs. Love Shoes show it on your page, let people know where you get your shoes from and why you love it. All these would serve as your CV for brands who fall under these different niche.(it’s what I call “Give out what you want to receive”) you can’t have crap pictures at crappy locations and expect luxury brands to reach out to you or take a first look at your page

Skirt: @K.tdavids Shoes: Boohoo (shipped to Nigeria using Mallforafrica

5 Social Media Marketing Do’s and Don’ts from a freelance Social Media Consultant

5 Social Media Marketing Do’s and Don’ts, THISTHINGCALLEDFASHIONIt’s about time I wrote about this, not just from a social media consultants perspective but also as a blogger/influencer who has been disgusted by ill-mannered marketing approaches and blown away by well thought out messages.

DON’TS

Don’t be spammy.

Just don’t do it. Do not send DMs/comments requesting for a follow back or create a group and share a link to your new product/post without permission.

Don’t ignore comments: Engaging with your customers is vital for business. They feel heard & more relevant but with no engagement they may feel as if you don’t care about their question, comment or concern. It all comes back to customer service. Don’t ignore relevant comments. Use them as an opportunity to interact with your followers.

Don’t rely on automation: This aspect is still very new to Nigerian business which is a good thing on this case because the brands still maintain a personal touch with their customers. Give them a personal experience, nevertheless it doesn’t hurt to schedule a few posts in a week to help relief the workload and stay consistent.

Don’t forget to network. Just as you would in real-life, it’s also important to make connections and grow your brand by building quality relationships on social media. You never know who you might be interacting with or better still that person or brand might refer you to other people who need your services and that’s the power of a few word-of-mouth shoutouts.

Don’t connect with everyone: I used to find it hard explaining this particular point a while back but I have come to realize that just because someone follows you, doesn’t mean you have to follow them back, no it’s not coming from a place of pride but Think of it as choosing who you surround yourself with in real life. Before you follow back, think of how it will reflect on you. Is this someone who would represent you and your business in a good way if customers saw that you were associated with them? or is this account fueling negative energy to you?

DO’S

DO take time out to understand your audience.

Just as you know yourself, it’s as important to know whom your target audience is. What do they do for a living? what time(s) they spend online etc. relevant information to help with what content to share & best times to share. Do not know how to? Hire the services of a Social Media Expert/Consultant to help CLICK HERE but it’s important to know your target audience at a base level will be valuable to when and what you post.

DO Consider what platform(s) is right for your business.

For example, a new accessories brand may find it easier to make a better impact on a photo-focused platform like Instagram, whereas a tech company making drones which might want to showcase their products via video-sharing platforms like YouTube.

Nevertheless Instagram now known as a social media platform for selling products with the direct link feature to shop now available to the masses, it’s safe to say Instagram should be one platform to highly consider to help push sales and awareness if done the right way.

DO Stay Social

Stay Social by actively engaging with other people’s content (if it’s appropriate), replying to direct messages. Also liking and sharing content you love from other pages and tagging.

Do Remember, social media is all about being social – and you have a part to play in upholding this notion.

DO Think before Tagging

This is one I find annoying & frequently done from time to time, yes this might bring the attention you need but also be considered as irrelevant attention so do think before tagging; tag businesses & people to create a dialogue or highlight something you love about them not random people in hopes of follow which can be quite spammy, unproductive or engaging.

For example: Brand posts picture of shoe, Tags 10 Influencers on one post to see shoe, Influencer logs in, taps to see post either blocks account or removes herself/himself from post but if

Brand posts picture asks a relevant question relating to the influencers niche or an on-going problem asking for their opinion? Influencer feels a tad bit important or need to voice her opinion which brings more credibility to your brand.

DO Think before Tagging

Tag & give credit when due. Esp; on Twitter and Instagram. Stay on the right side of social media etiquette by giving credits to the author or photographer when you share an interesting image or tweet. If possible go the extra mile to ask for permission.

Extra Tip:

Do your research: There’s nothing like researching, reading and growing your mind adding value to your intellectual property. I did that today and I learnt something new which I’ll be putting to use soon to help grow my brand as a content creator and curator

That’s all the tea for today, I hope this helps you make better decision as a brand and helps increase your brands visibility & customer base.

Collaboration| Matching Snake prints with Uchaychy

Hello Fashionistas,

Despite unpopular believe, I’m always happy starting a New Week and with this new week comes my first collaboration of 2019 an interview with a good friend Uchechi Ihuomah; Co-founder of YDT digital, Contributor on TheDigitalTinker & Lifestyle Blogger of Uchaychy.

It’s quite insightful getting to know your friend on a more professional level, We both got a snake-print fashion item late last year at the Shop Maju x Revlon Shopping Party and I thought to myself what better way to do a Collaboration than to have a theme set around it?

Knowing Uchaychy owned a snake-print skirt I curated an entire look in my head on how she would style it and a few days later I styled myself and uchaychy, we took pictures and OUR COLLABORATION came to life.

I Hope you enjoy reading this as much as I loved putting it together.

  • Well, I wouldn’t say there was a moment I decided to be a creative rather when I started my blog was a huge step for me in being creative and also when YDT was started.

I hear you Co-Founded a brand called “YDT” what’s that about ?

  • YDT, my baby…Lool YDT (Your Dream Team Digital Agency) is a social media event marketing company. My business partner & I saw the gap most companies and individual have which is proper social media marketing. What’s the typical work process for a YDT job ?

  • Content strategizing, content creation, social media management and finding clients

What does being a Social Media Manager entail?

  • To be a social media manager you have to be a creative thinker, a planner and creator. You have to be able to spot great content and ask yourself ‘How was that done’ and figure it out instantly.

Where do you see your brand in 5 years?

  • The easiest question, I see my brand constantly breaking grounds and adding value.

How do you balance blogging, content creation and social media management ?

  • Honestly, I still struggle with this as I have YDT, my blog and social media management but one thing that helps is structure and planning every day. Balancing my blogging, content creation & social media management is still an on-going process for me.
